Performance of cauvery (Coffea arabica cv. Catimor) under different agronomic practices

Establishment and performance of Cauvery (Coffea arabica cv. Catimor) under different agronomic practices at the Regional Coffee Research Station, Thandigudi, Tamilnadu, are detailed. Initial establishment of Cauvery (S.4347) in field outclassed SLN.3 (S.795), SLN.5 (S.2931), and SLN.9 (S.2790) with 91 to 94 percent success. In the topping trial, the yield was found to be significantly higher in 5' topped and untopped plants in the initial years, but first topping at 3' - 3½' is recommended in view of plant condition and for sustained yield. The yield as well as response of Cauvery to fertilizer application was found to be significantly superior under open conditions (1083 Kg clean coffee/acre) than that of shaded condition (810 kg clean coffee/acre). In another trial, under open condition with irrigation and monthly manuring, the average yield of Cauvery over 4 seasons reached 1572 Kg clean coffee per acre. In the drip irrigation trial, the plot receiving 5 litres of water per plant per day (excepting rainy days and winter months from December to February) recorded 846 kg clean coffee per acre but above 5 litres per plant, the yield declined. In fertilizer application trial on Cauvery, the application of fertilizers under the entire plant canopy, which ultimately resulted in broadcasting in well-covered Cauvery, was found to have an edge over drip-circle placement of fertilizer. In essence, the results indicated that Cauvery responded significantly to fertilizers and irrigation under open condition.
