Establishment of Leptomastix dactylopii How. (Hym.: Encyrtidae) in Karnataka for control of Planococcus citri (Risso) (Hom.: Pseudococcidae) of coffee
The mealybug Planococcus citri (Risso) (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae) is one of the economically important sucking pests infesting coffee in India. Leptomastix dactylopii HOW. (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), the introduced parasitoid of P. citri, was multiplied in the insectary and released on mealybug infested coffee estates in Karnataka during 1984-90 for colonisation and establishment. About 1,58,000 nos. of the adult parasitoids were released on 49 coffee estates in Karnataka. The parasitoid was recovered from 29 estates and further establishment was seen in 19 estates. The percentage of parasitism varied from 0 to 85 in different estates. The non-recovery, non-persistence and low parasitism was due to the existence of different mealybug species.
