Ruiru 11, adoption and performance in the estate sector in Kenya
The paper reports on adoption treads and perfomance of the new Coffee Arabica hybrid variety, Ruiru 11 in the estate coffee sector. Data from a survey involving 140 estates showed that there has been an adoption level of around 36 percent since the variety's introduction in 1986 with the level of adoption varying with estate location, size and level of production technology used. Most Ruiru 11 plantings has been done though allocation of a new piece of land with wider spacings being preferred to closer ones. Ruiru 11 yield has been shown to be influenced by level of production technology and plant density but on average, the variety has 70 percent to 100 percent higher yields than traditional varieties per annum. Farm level advantages, disadvantages and constraints hindering adoption have been highlighted. The amounts, sources of Ruiru 11 investment capital and national implications of the variety's continued adoption has been discussed.
