Heterosis and Arabica coffee breeding in Ethiopia; a review of the importance of hybrids for future hybrid seed production

The importance of hybrid coffee (Coffea arabica L.) is reviewed to provide a foundation of work for the establishment of seed gardens and the production of hybrid seed. The benefits of heterotic coffee of indigenous origin for the productivity of this crop are also explored and it is concluded that there are numerous landraces yet untested which, after hybridization, could result in high economic advantages over pure lines for many agronomic traits. At present, however, the need is to facilitate the production of hybrid seeds via artificial cross pollination. The use of such perennial hybrids for high crop yield and quality, though costly, could provide high and stable yield over years and a wide range of environments. Steps for artificial cross pollination and a schematic chart outlining the major activities are provided for hybrid progeny evaluation and hybrid seed production. Tissue culture as a potential alternative to conventional breeding is briefly examined.
