Effects of moisture content on cryopreservation of coffea and vigna seeds and embryos
Coffee (Coffea liberica Bull. ex Hiern) seeds can be successfully cryopreserved after desiccating them to a moisture content of 16.7 per cent (53.3 per cent survival) while the embryos gave 83-86 per cent survival after cryopreservation with a moisture content of 15-20 per cent. It was observed that coffee seeds with endocarp survived better then those without it. Vigna sesquipedalis L. seeds however, showed the normal characteristics of orthodox seeds where both the seeds and excised embryos survived cryopreservation (>90 per cent survival) at a moisture content or around 9 per cent and 6.7 - 10.5 per cent respectively.
