Osmotic adjustments under moisture stress in coffee

The differential behaviour of the coffee cultivars in making osmotic adjustment by the accumulation of free proline, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and carbohydrates, which decreased the leaf osmotic potential in similar conditions under water deficit was investigated. The tolerant cultivars were capable of making high osmotic adjustments. Among the species screened, Arabica coffee showed more tolerance/resistance to drought than the Robusta coffee (Coffea canephora cv. S.274 - SLN.1(R)). Among Arabica coffee, SLN.7.3. (San Ramon x S.795 x Agaro x H.D.T.)) and SLN.9 (Hybrid-of-Timor x Tafarikela) had shown more tolerance/resistance to drought than SLN.3 (cv. S.795). Maximun adaptability to drought tolerance was observed in SLN.7.3. This differential behaviour of coffee cultivars in making osmotic adjustments under moisture stress suggest a way of screening coffee cultivars for drought tolerance/resistance in the seedling stage itself
