Pattern of fruit growth and development in inter-specific hybrids of Coffea canephora X Coffea arabica

Fruit growth was studied by measuring changes in fruit weight and size (lenght, breadth and thickness) during development in Coffea canephora, C. arabica, their F1, backcrosses and generations derived from backcross to arabica. C. canephora showed a linear type of growth while in C. arabica it was more or less bisigmoidal. Scoring of progenies for differences in fruit weight at 90 days from flower opening revealed expected trends viz., weight as in Canephora in backcross to Canephora and weigth as in arabica in majority of the plants in backcross to arabica and further generations from it. Near-maximum fruit size was attained much earlier than fruit weight which showed that further increase in fruit weight was mainly due to changes in the internal components of the fruit such as endocarp and endosperm development
