The genetics of Coffea
Investigations of the genetic characters of a woody perennial plant such as coffee require long periods of time and involved considerable expense, labor and space in a lathhouse and field plantings. These are important factors that have tended to limit the information available. It is the objective of this paper to present a general review on coffee genetics including some unpublished data. The genus Coffea is polymorphic. The morphology of the mitotic and meiotic chromosomes of C. canephora and C. arabica has been studied. All species so far studied are self-sterile except for C. arabica which is self-fertile. A greater number of mutants occur in the tetraploid C. arabica than in the diploid C. canephora. General characteristics of the gene mutants so far studied in C. arabica
