The Coffee Berry Disease can cause the loss of 50 of the Kenya coffee production, which makes it an urgent matter to breed cultivars resistant to this disease. A breeding programme was started in 1971 at the Coffee Research Station at Ruiru. A preselection test proved to be very satisfactory (r=0.70-0.80). Its purpose was to breed hybrids chosen a parents or common clonal parents, and this proved to be very useful for the study of the transmission of resistance to Coffee Berry Disease. The breeding programme enebled four hundred crosses to be obtained, all planted after pre-selection for resistance to Coffee Berry Disease. The new clonal cultivars, resistant to Coffee Berry Disease and having a good productivity, will be available in Kenia in 1987. Clonal cultivars of compact habit and well-suited to high-density planting will be available in 1980
