Studies on the seed mycoflora of coffee with special reference to stinkers (foxy beans)

Coffee beans collected from coffee processing units in Karnataka were screened for the presence of stinkers. Coffee seeds stored at room temperature showed high incidence of Aspergillus niger. The seed samples with parchment also showed more incidence of A. niger. In contrast, even at room temperature the per cent incidence of Fusarium moniliforme and F. semitectum was more in the seed samples without parchment. Seeds collected from the fruits treated with A. niger did not show any stinker's symptoms. Coffee beans treated with spore suspension of A. niger incubated at 60 grade C. for 17 h showed stinker's symptoms. Among the seed components endosperm showed high incidence of A. niger
