Photosynthese et photorespiration du caféier (Coffea arabica L.): effets d'une attaque de rouille (Hemileia vastatrix Berk et Br) :
In disorders of the vegetative system such as rust (Hemileia vastatrix B. and Br.) of coffee (Coffea arabica L.), it is very difficult to assess damage in terms of production losses. We therefore tried, initially, to identify the changes in the plant/environment exchanges in order to define at which level of attack (number of diseased leaves/plant and diseased area/leaf) the functioning of the vegetative apparatus begins to be really perturbed. We undertook continuous study of healthy and diseased plants of the Caturra variety by controlling the effects of the different environmental parameters and measuring the gaseous interchanges between the plant and the environment. We were particularly interested in net photosynthesis and photorespiration. Study of the photosynthetic characteristics confirms that coffee has the characters of C3 type plants (high photorespiratory activity, CO2 compensation point of about 50-60 ppm). Under the conditions in this experiment, coffee behaves like a plant that is adapted to low levels of light energy. Study of the plants infected with coffee rust shows a more or less sustantial drop in net phothosynthesis according to the state of development of the plants and the environmental parameters studied. Only the trophic aspect of the metabolical disorders caused by coffee rust has been taken into consideration; the perturbations to hormone regulation need to be studied in order to provide a better understanding of the real effects of this disease
