Bilan economique de la response a la fertilisation d'une caféiere irriguée par aspersion au Togo
In 1980, the Togo Ministry of Rural Development considered that plans could be made to extend coffee growing in Togo beyond the traditional coffee-growing areas (North Kloto, Plateaux, Dayes, Klabé-Azafi, Akébou). The limiting factors for this project in the new areas are drought and low rainfall. In the areas identified as being marginal for coffee, these two constraints must be controlled before any large-scale project can be undertaken. IRCC was made responsible for studying the conditions for extending coffee to these unfavourable regions. In the investigative phase, it was considered advisable to study the behaviour of the new IRCC selected clones in a 4.5 ha irrigated area alongside the Sio. The frequency of sprinkling is controlled by tensiometers in order to avoid water wastage and high running costs. In the second phase, study was undertaken to find out whether it would be profitable to use fertilizer on irrigated coffee. The plot was thus used for a factorial fertilizer trial, which will make it possible to determine the optimun and economical rates of application for the different fertilizer formulae used for irrigated coffee. This paper ends with calculations of the amortization of the whole operation. After four years' cropping, we have set out the results recorded and an initial economic assessment of the response to fertilizers in this trial. In our conclusion, we suggest the most efficient formulae under these growing conditions
