Soil fertility, fertilizer usage and field of coffee in Tamilnadu

The soil nutrient status, fertilizer usage, liming and yield pattern in the coffee zones of Tamil Nadu as evaluated by the Mobile Soil Testing Laboratory (Unit 1) are discussed. Soil analyses indicated that only 26.5 per cent of the soils tested was acidic in soil reaction. Majority of the holdings covered were adequately supplied with P and K with nutrient indices of 1.7 to 2.3 for P and 1.8 to 2.2 for K. Information gathered along with the samples from 994 holdings revealed that about 56 per cent of the small holdings of less than 5 acres was not manured and 15 per cent used only FYM. In the 5-10 acre and 11-25 acre groups and in the large holdings manuring was found to be common though the quantity of applied NPK varied from less than 30 kg/acre to 240 kg/acre. In the new clearings 55 per cent did not receive any fertilizer. Liming was undertaken only in a few estates as acidity was not a problem in majority of the areas tested. The crop average was less than 100 kg/acre in 40 percent between 101-250 kg/acre in 33 per cent and between 251-500 kg/acre in 21 per cent of the holdings. Only in 6 per cent of the estates studied the yield exceeded half-a-tonne per acre
