Lyamungu dieback of arabica coffee in Tanganyika, 2: Relation of starch reserves to Lyamungu dieback

Coffee trees suffering from Lyamungu dieback showed restricted vegetative and fruit growth, leading to death. Both chemical and visual estimations of starch reserves in woody tissue demonstrated that affected trees had lower reserves than healthy trees. The starch deficit appears to be a causal factor in the condition. It is suggested that this deficit may be caused by an imbalance between crop and vegetative growth, associated with low soil fertility
