Hill land mechanization in Puerto Rico

Problems associated with hill land farming along with alternate solutions are discussed. Results of hill land mechanization research (1974-1984) in Puerto Rico are presented. Machinery suitable for hill-land farming was tested, viz. several mechanical diggers for harvesting cocoyams, a mechanical shaker for harvesting coffee, 2 hole diggers for planting fruit trees, bananas and plantains, a tilting transport cart capable of operating in wet conditions, as well as walking tillers (5, 8 and 13 hp). In particular, the 13-hp Yanmar TC 11 diesel walking type tractor, equiped with a 75 cm rotary tiller, front mounted mower and furrowing attachments, showed great promise for the small hill-land farmer.
