Irrigation effects on vegetative growth of coffee

In 2 pot-trials carried out in Hawaii the effect of the amount and frequency of irrigation on the vegetative growth of coffee seedlings with a height between 40 to 50 cm were studied. In the first experiment different plants received 10, 25, 50, 100 or 200 ml water/day during 4 weeks. Only plants, receiving 100 and 200 ml/day, showed positive height growth throghout the period. At 50 ml/day, height growth stagnation was observed after 2 weeks. Receiving 25 and 50 ml/day resulted in wilting and necrosis of the terminal shoot. In the 2nd experiments seedlings received 700 ml/week divided into 1,2,4 or 7 applications/week. After 4 weeks no significant differences in height were observed. The one-a-week watering treatment significantly reduced leaf area and leaf dry weight. (ATA V. 12(3):58228. 1987)
