Rhizosphere and rhizoplane microflora of coffee seedlings
Rhizosphere and rhizoplane microflora of coffee seedlings were studied by the dilution plate technique. The number of fungi, yeast and bacteria was higher in the rhizosphere than in the rhizoplane. A comparison of the microflora of seedlings from seeds treated with carboxin (Vitavax 75 WP) and untreated seeds revealed significant differences. Among the fungi isolated, Aspergillus spp. was predominant followed by Fusarium spp. Rhizoctonia solani, the incitant of collar rot of coffee seedlings, was observed both in rhizosphere and rhizoplane of seedlings from the untreated seeds but absent where treated seeds were sown. Seed treatment with carboxin decreased the fungal flora associated with roots
