Coffee irrigation using overhead sprinkler system

Irrigation is an important exercise for increasing crop production. However, excessive and untimely irrigation can affect yield adversely. Therefore, a new and more precise method of monitoring irrigation need in coffee has been developed and described. The method is based on the time taken for the dry cobalt chloride paper disk to change its colour from blue to pink when attached to the abaxial side of the leaf at what has been termed the critical leaf water potential of-20 bar. If the time taken for the colour change is more than 5 minutes (between 1.00 and 2.00 p.m.), trees should be irrigated otherwise not. Also, the conventional method, which is based on the soil moisture deficit, has been described. The paper explains further the procedure for having a proper design of sprinkler irrigation enabling farmers to apply the required depth of irrigation once the assessment as to the irigation need has been established. A nomograph, that gives the application rate for various flow rates per sprinkler as a function of sprinkler spacings has been developed. Diagrams, which give the flow rate as a function of operating pressure for various nozzle sizes, have also been provided
