Physiological factors influencing irrigation management of coffee in Rhodesia

Vegetative growth occurs mainly in the rainy season but fruit growth continues over the dry season. Irrigation should be used to ensure this growth and prevent physiological dieback. A six to eight week period of stress should be allowed after bud differentiation to ensure an early and abundant flowering and to avoid late crop. Irrigation practice should be flexible to take account of various physiological factors like biennial bearing, physiological dieback, and late crop as they are encountered. The efficiency of irrigation can be improved by the adoption of water conserving practices, like mulching and clean weeding
