A census of web-building spiders in a coffee plantation at Wau, New Guinea and an assessment of their insecticidae effect
A census of web-building spiders was carried out by day and night during July 1974 in quadrats totalling 200 metres in area at Wau, Morobe District, New Guinea. A total of 1,324 spiders, os 26 species, were counted; this represents 24,163000 spiders per hectare. From sample weights of individuals of each species the total wet weight of 98.534 g was computed for the censused population. From these data and previously published figures on the prey consuption of araneids the toal insect kill of the spiders can be calculated. This works out a nearly 40,000,000 insects per year, per hectare, with a wet weight of 160 kg
