The effect of pot size and type of compost on growth of coffee seedlings in polybag nurseries
Results are presented of a nursery experiment with coffee seedlings grown in polybags of different sizes and using various potting mixtures. There were no significant differences between the six composts. The least expensive and therefore recommended compost consist of a mixture of topsoil, coarse sand or basalt gravel dust and farmyard manure (15:10:5). Seedlings grown in the larger size polybags (volume 2300 cm3) gave far superior seedlings in all aspects of growth and dry matter production. Ten months old seedlings grown in the small bags (volume 1100 cm3) had also a constricted root system. Cost of raising coffee seedlings in polybags of the larger size was about KSh. 1.00 per seedling. The considerable advantages of coffee seedlings raised in polybags compared to seedlings grown in beds are discussed
