Effect of gibberellic acid on yield of Arabica Coffee in Kenya
Foliar sprays of three gibberellic acid (GA3) at 100 ppm were applied to mature trees times during the rainy season between March-May, 1974 and February - April or March- May, 1975, at various altitude sites. The treatment increased yield of the following year's crop by 12-26 from the 1974 sprays. The 1975 applications increased yield of the 1976 crop by 8-69 at some sites but reduced yield by 5-22 at other sites. Size, liquor and appearance of beans was not affected. GA3 at 25, 50 and 100 ppm applied two to four times to whole trees 4 to 10 week-old fruits increased bean dry weight by 6-10 grade A beans by 13-23 and overall quality standerd slighty. It has been suggested that the source of variability in yield response to gibberellic acid has to be worked out before a recommendation on the use of this chemical can be made
