High density coffee: yield results for the first cycle from systematic plant spacing designs

The yields during the first cycle from systematic plant density experiments have been analysed by means of a mathematical yield-density relationship. Optimum densities were generally higher for the crop produced between 2 and 3 years from planting than for the subsequent year. For the latter crop, the mean optimum density was 5.6 thousand plants per hectare. A density of 5 thousand plants/ha came within 13 of the maximum yield at all sites. At most sites, high densities slightly reduced mean bean weight. With one exception, the proportion of early crop from sites in areas with bimodal cropping pattern was reduced by increasing density
