Root system of dwarf and tall plants in San Ramon hybrids of Coffea arabica
Root and shoot systems of dwarf and tall types in Dwarf x Tall hybrids of C. arabica (F3 of var San Ramon X S.795) are described. Comparison between the two types indicated that girth of stem and primary branches in dwarf was smaller while that of secondary and tertiary did not differ much. Number of primary and secondary branches was more in dwarf while tertiaries were more in the tall type. Lenght of internodes in dwarf was smaller while the number of nodes was higher. The above characteristics give the plant type small size and compactness. Root to shoot ratio indicated that the root in dwarf is more for the size of the crown when compared with the tall type. Fresh and dry weights of root in the dwarf were comparable with those of the tall type and indicated the superiority of the root system in the dwarf type.
