The use of calflo E solid support for extraction of benzo(a)pyrene and other polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from large quantities of fats and oils
A method is presented for the isolation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from large test portions of fats and oils: 30 g of lipid material are adsorbed on synthetic calcium silicate (Calflo E) and extracted with a mixture of acetonitrile-acetone 9:1. The evaporated extract containing only small amounts of co-extracted fat is subjected to one of the current methods for PAH analysis. The technique is also applicable to difficult substrates as lecithin, spice oleoresins and essential oils. Recoveries for several PAHs including benzo(a)pyrene ranged from 72-87 percent.
