Studies on cuttings in cocoa

Propagation of cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) by cuttings in Malaysia had earlier been described by Keeping (1950) where softwood fan cuttings in very coarse sand had percentage rooting of 95 percent using growth promoting hormone in 3 to 4 weeks. The methods of rooting used followed exactly the lines suggested by Pyke (1931) at Trinidad. The growth regulating hormone used was IBA (Indole-Butyric acid) at 6000 ppm. Somappa and Rao (1983) reported that IBA (3000 ppm) gave maximum percent rooting compared with NAA in air layering. The success of cuttings in vegetative propagation of cocoa depends on the ability of the cuttings to produce roots. This study was conducted to observe the effects of two exogenous application of hormones, one leaf versus two leaves, types of cutting and wax treatment on rooting potential of cuttings.
