Caracterizacao dos recursos genéticos do cacaueiro, 2: Flor de selecoes da Bahia das séries SIC e SIAL

In continuation of the characterization of the accessions in the cacao germplasm collection at the Centro de Pesquisas do Cacau in Bahia, Brazil, the descriptors of the flowers of 26 clones of the SIC and SIAL selections in the Bahia cacao population are presented. Although most clones showed a small range of variability, some were distinguishable on the basis of their distinctive character. SIC 19 had the largest values, for sepal and ligule size, the shape of both organs being more narrowly elongate than in the other clones. SIAL 105 had the largest ovary and was also notable on account of the large sepals. Among the clones with small flowers SIAL 638 also had the shortest staminodes, the smallest ovary and the lowest number of ovule, with a maximum of 47. The maximum ovule number in the other clones was 54 (clones SIC 433 and SIC 644) and the mean ovule number was independent of the ovary dimensions. With the exception of SIC 823, whose flowers are devoid of pigmentation, the clones were separated into two distinct groups on the basis of the intensity of anthocianin pigmentation in the flower parts.
