Strains of Phytophthora palmivora (Butl.) Butl. from Theobroma cacao L., 1: Isolates fom West Africa

Distincts strains of Phytophthora palmivora were found when 179 isolates from ten cocoa-producing countries in West Africa were examined. Comparative tests showed the strains to differ in lesion development on cacao pods, in sporangial dimensions and in geographical distribution. Results of nearly 900 crossing tests showed that the two dominant strains were sexually complementary, whilst another small group of isolates atypical of P. palmivora, was complementary to neither of the other two. Classification and distribution of the strains are discussed.
