Problemes de développement de la production cacaoyere dans les districts de Sembé et Souanké (Congo)
The Sembé and Souanké districts in the northern part of the Congo Republic have a total population of 22.000 inhabitants for a surface area of 22.000 sq. km. (1 inhab./per sq. km.). Their economy is based on cocoa, but production is limited by the low population and its bad geographical distribution, only a third of the inhabitants living in the most favourable areas. A better population distribution would develop the very fertile eastern part (Sembé district), where per capita income reached 80 dollars in 1972. This redistribution would increase cocoa production to 3500 tons in 1985; a higher level could only be obtained through improved farming techniques and immigration.
