Response of young cocoa to vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculation

To study the effect of VA mycorrhizal inoculation on the growth and the nutrient uptake by roots of cocoa, an experiment was conducted in the green house of the Research Institute for Estate Crop, Jember. Latosol soil, used as growing medium, was taken from Kaliwining experimental garden. Sparingly soluble rock phosphate was used in this experiment in order to know the capability of mycorrhizal cocoa in using this phosphate source. The result proved that the response of young cocoa to VA mycorrhizal inoculation was low when planted in fertile soil, as shown by the plant growth parameters assessed. Root, shoot and total dry weights were not significantly greater in mycorrhizal plants than in the non-mycorrhizal control. The uptake of micro-and macronutrients, specially the slow release P, is better in the mycorrhizal infected plant than in the uninfected one.
