Witches' broom

During the year 19 inoculation tests were made involving 1169 seedlings from 14 crosses including three from INIAP Ecuador. Earlier work on the resistance to Witches' broom withing the Scavina family has been reported in the Annual Reports for 1967 and 1970. The data confirm previous results that SCA 3, 5 and 24 carry from this series of inoculations for planting in observation plots at Las Hermanas. It appears that EET 399 and 400, clonal selections from Silecia 1 selected in Ecuador for resistance to Witches' broom may provide a new source of resistance to the Trinidad strain of Marasmius perniciosa. In Ecuador PA- 121 shows a certain amount of field resistant to Witches' broom but the tests now reported are inconclusive. This work has become increasingly important in view of the complete loss of resistance of the Scavina hybrids in Ecuador.
