The occurrence of abnormal trees in a budded cocoa orchard
Dwarf and abnormally high trees have always been regarded as a problem in budded cocoa orchard in East Java, since they come into bearing two years later than normal and produce very few fruits. To overcome it a short term research program was executed at Kaliwining Experimental Garden; the influence of the original main stem lengths of the scionstocks on their vegetative progenies was studied. The results showed, that different original lenghts of scionstocks produced progenies with significant different lengths of mainstem; dwarf scionstocks produced dwarf budded trees while extra long scionstocks abnormally long stemmed trees. Based on this fact it is advisable not to use abnormally short or long scionstocks for budding in the orchard
