Population and yield of cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao L.) (A mathematical analysis to predict an optimal population density to get a maximum yield per area unit)

It has been proved that cocoa behaves in the same way as corn does toward increasing population density. There is an optimal population density to get a maximum yield. After the optimal population has been passed every addition to the number of trees per area unit will result in a decrease of the yield. By calculation it has been found that for Nigeria a population of 3.392 trees per hectare will be optimal; the corresponding maximum yield is 28.350 pods per hectare and for Jatirono the optimal population is found to be 3.026 trees per hectare and reaches a maximum production of 27.296 pods. It seems that for getting a more reliable result, some adjustments in the calculation are needed, especially those of the measurement unit of yield
