A new neotropical Forcipomyia midge closely related to F (F.) genualis (Loew) (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)
Forcipomyia (Forcipomyia) harpegonata n.sp. is described in all stages from Puerto Rico. The species also occurs from the Bahamas through the West Indiest and in Central and South America from Costa Rica to Brazil. Its range coincides closely with a related species, F. genualis (Loew), that occurs from the southern United States through Mexico, Central and South America to southern Brazil, and across the West Indies to Bermuda and the island of Sao Tomé near Africa. Both species are common in cacao plantations, breeding in rotting cacao leaves and husks and the adults frequenting cacao flowers. The larval habitats of both species include a wide range of decaying plant materials. Diagnostic characters of adults and larvae are figured for both species
