Contribuicao para melhorar o método de preparo de áreas para o plantío de bananeira (Musa sapientum L.), como sombra provisória para o cacaueiro (Theobroma cacao L.) no Reconcavo da Bahia, Brasil

The mechanical preparations of fields for banana planting to provide temporary shade for cacao in the Reconcavo, Bahia, is an agricultural practice which has been questioned because of the increased cost of petroleum by-products and soil erosion problems. The present paper is aimed at improving the mechanical preparation through the use of pre-emergence herbicide (diuron), with or whithout incorporation into the soil, and the direct planting of banana using the preplanting herbicide glyphosate. The results of banana rhizome germination showed that the use of machinery for soil preparation gave greater germination when compared with direct planting. The use of pre-emergence herbicide after soil preparation gave a greater banana tree growth and adequate shade for cacao seedlings when compared with the traditional practice and direct planting. Fewer weeds occurred when the herbicide was applied without incorporation into the soil. The traditional method and direct planting gave greater weed infestation indices. All treatments affected differently the sucession of weed flora. The addition of pre-emergence herbicide in the mechanical soil preparation method allowed a greater height of the banana trees and an adequate shade supply for cacao seedlings in a period of time compatible with the time schedules of cacao planting areas. The direct planting method greatly affected banana rhizome germination and banana tree growth
