A comparison of Dichlorvos and Pirethrum fogs against some storage pests on cocoa beans

Four storage pests; Tribolium castaneum (Herbst.), Lasioderma serricorne (Fab.), Sitophilus oryzae (L.) and Cadra cautella (Walker), were exposed in empty cocoa sheds to dichlorvos and pyrethrum fogs at doses ranging from 0.025-0.8 per cent, applied at the rate of one litre/20,000 ft3 (142 m3). Responses of each species to the two insecticides were compared. Although it was not possible to estimate ratios of potencies of the two insecticides for each species, it was established that over the dosage range used, dichlorvos had a clear superiority over pyrethrum. If tainting and residual tests on cocoa beans to be carried out in future prove favourable, it will be profitable for the Infestation Control Unit of the Ghana Cocoa Marketing Board to switch from pyrethrum to dichlorvos for the treatment of cocoa
