Essais d'engrais sur cacaoyers menes dans la region de Yaounde, Cameroun

The paper describes the heterogeneous conditions (of shade, cacao population and yield) under which the trial was undertaken. The methods of analyses were conducted on (1) individual tree yield (2) one year pre-treatment yield (3) the logarithm of the ration P1/P02K1 (where P1 is yield in the first year, P0 yield in the year of commencement and K1=T1/T0, ratio of yield of the control in year 1 to yield in year (0) and (4) the effect of the absence or presence of fertilizers on the distribution of the various pod categories. It was observed that the yield of the control increased by about 30 percent from year 1 to year 0. The yield of the treated plots increased over year 7 and year 8 by 50 percent compared to the control. No yield difference was observed for the four fertilizer (N, P, K, CaMg) treatments when the classical methods of analyses were applied. A method of multiple regression by stages using least square averages was employed. It was concluded that the initial condition of the tree is the most important factor which accounts for the variability in the final output. On poor cacao, K depresses yield while NPCAMG has favourable effect. On high yielders NCaMg has no effect but PK is beneficial. It was observed that the initial state and fertilizer factors accounted for only 14 to 29 percent of the variability. The bulk of the variability remains unexplained, which probably reflects the great heterogeneity of the material and the difficulty in reducing some of the conditions. It seems that future tests must attempt to homogenise the vegetative material
