A preliminary report on experiments of hand pollination and fertilizers in cacao
Two experiments were conducted in Turrialba with 14-year-old cuttings of UF-667 clone to test a combination of heavy hand pollination and the use of fertilizers. No response to fertilizers with and without pollination was obtained. Hand pollination increased yields significantly, at least 4 times as much as open pollination. However, heavily hand-pollinated trees did not flower during the November-January peak, while open-pollinated trees flowered normally. In the subsequent April-June cycle of flowering, the hand-pollinated trees with fertilizers began flowering earlier than hand-pollinated ones without fertilizers, indicating some response to fertilizers. Cherelle wilt and infection with Phytophthora palmivora were more prevalent in the hand-pollinated plots, but not significantly different from the checks
