Inter-specific hybridization in Theobroma
Attempts were made to cross Theobroma cacao with Herrania T. bicolor, T. speciosa, T. grandiflora and T. microcarpa. In the crosses of T. cacao x T. bicolor, T. cacao x T. grandiflora and T. cacao x Herrania, the hand pollinated F1 pods contained various proportions of "flat beans". The normal beans resembled those of the maternal parent (T. cacao). The pods resultings from the cross T. cacao x T. grandiflora contained only "flat beans". The reciprocal cross Herrania x T. cacao, failed to set fruits. The pods from the cross T. cacao x Herraria equalled those from the cross Na 32 x Pa 35 in growth, shape and size
