Soil aspects of cacao rehabilitation in Western Nigeria

Factors other than pests and diseases associated with early decline of cacao farms in Nigeria are: drought, exposure and in certain areas exhaustion of soil fertility. Cacao generally survives over a long period on good soils and consequently relatively poor soils will first become available for further planting. These soils are low in organic carbon, clay content, exchangeable bases (except potassium) and mostly deficient in phosphorus. Replanting schemes therefore should not only deal with the distribution of improved planting material but also with the improvement of soils. Application of fertilizers and mulch improved the soil chemical fertility and structure. Because of the long dry season, drought susceptible sandy soil should not be considered for replanting. On exposed farms, windbreaks are required to protect young seedlings against the desiccating effect of the harmattan winds
