For a self-sustained development

One of the most important objectives of biosphere reserves is obtaining social participation, so that communities will play an active role in the protection and management of their resources and satisfy their most urgent needs. In the tropical zones, especially in the developing countries of Latin America, the pressure to acquire land and the struggle to conserve, manage and develop natural resources are phenomena which strongly condition the achievement of a reserve's objectives. In this article several considerations are offered which reveal the main difficulties which natural scientists have in understanding these social problems, and guidelines are drawn from experience in the field which may help solve this conflict and lead to more harmonious relations in the working mileu of biosphere reserves.
