Adaptability of monitoring systems in the management of biosphere reserves - Experiences in Hungary

Experiences and objectives of the actually functioning and subsequently evolving monitoring systems of three Hungarian biosphere reserves of different characters. Kiskunsag Biosphere Reserve is an area of arid character and a great variety of surface, with sand dunes and alkaline plains, in the centre of the lowlands of the Carpathian Basin. Pilis Biosphere Reserve is a territory of mountains of medium height, located in the vicinity of the agglomeration of Budapest, with significant natural, recreational and historic-cultural values. Ferto/Neusiedlersee Biosphere Reserves is on the Hungarian-Austrian border, as the westernmost shallow steppe lake of Eurasia is an area of considerable natural and recreational significance. Experiences gathered till now are emphatically underlining the fact, that only the expert evaluation of those data series prove to be useful in the manatement of biosphere reserves, which derive from monitoring systems evolved on the base of precursory fundamental ecological research work.
