Conceptual balance models of natural and semi-natural ecosystems of the Central-Chernozyom Biosphere Reserve and their analysis

A conceptual-balance model of the organic matter cycle in a standard ecosystem of the Central-Chernozyom biosphere reserve, namely in the grassland steppe, is analyzed. Primary production and trophic linksare described quantitatively. It has been discovered that plants (respiration) contribute 48 of the total gas exchange in the ecosystem, microorganisms - 45 saprophages - 2, phytophages and predators - less than 1, abiotic oxidation - 5. This ecosystem is compared with rangelands subjected to an increasing grazing and haymaking load. A system of quantitative criteria is proposed to estimate the ecosystem stability and to find optimal regimes of agricultural use.
