Peat-bogs of Biebrza valley - a proposed biosphere reserve

Poland lies within the Central European zone of fens and forest oligotrophic raised bogs. However, there are almost no natural fens within this zone due to drainage and cultivation. In the north-eastern part of Poland there still exists one of the most natural fen complexes in Europe, in the valley of Biebrza River, covering some 100 000 ha. It is about 100 km long with a width range of from 1-3 to 40 km. This complex has great natural and scientific value of international significance and is being proposed as a biosphere reserve.
