Man's attempt to manage the swamp river system in the Obion-Forked Deer basin of Northwest Tennessee-some successes and failures

The Obion-Forked Deer Basin Authority is an agency of State Government which provides assurances to maintain and operate the completed works of the Corps of Engineers has responsibility for developing and implementing a plan for comprehensive development and management of the water and related natural resources, primarily in the floodplain, of this 14 county, 5000 square mile area of northwest Tennessee. This river system was channelized in the early part of this century with no adequate provision made for maintenance. Two depresions, two world wars, and several major military conflicts resulted in a lack of attention to the approximate one million acre floodplain. During this 40-year period tremendous losses have occurred in these excellent stands of bottomland hardwood timber. Along with timber loss by errors of both commission and omission has been a loss of wildlife habitat. This basin constains approximately 11 percent of the State's land and produces almost 41 percent of the State's agricultural income. Our story deals with the historical perspective of this region and our efforts to cope with the problems and manage the system in a responsible manner
