Implantacao, manejo e utilizacao do sistema agroflorestal cercas vivas de Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) Steud. na Costa Rica

This study was conceived and developed in order to improve the practice of low yield agroecosystems and to select sound practices of land use, for social, economical and ecological benefits. A survey was executed in Costa Rica in order to identify the factors affecting establishment, management and utilization of Gliricidia sepium living fences. The survey was acomplished in five ecological regions. In each one of them samples were collected for physical and chemical analysis. For the establishment, most of the knowledge is aimed to maximize the survival of the cuttings depth of planting and when to attach the wire. Periodic pruning is the most important activity for maintenance and utilization for production of new living posts, firewood, wind protection, etc. In spite of all the benefits actually obtained, it is the author's opinion that more benefits can be derived from this species when used in living fences. Tissue analysis showed that Gliricidia leaves contain more N, P and Ca than new shoots. The differences are not significant for K and Mg. The leaves are then recommended as a forage because of its in vitro digestibility (average = 66,6) and crude proteina (average = 26,8). The species deserves more research to evaluate biomass production in living fences by the use of different harvesting periods.
