Preliminary studies on silage making from Gliricidia sepium (madero negro)
Improved nutrition during dry seasons is a prerequisite to enhance milk and meat production in the tropics, especially for owners of small holdings in well-populated areas. Silage making is theoretically the only method of harvesting surplus forage at a high nutritive growth stage in the tropics during the wet season. Silage of higher protein content and nutritive value could be prepared from Gliricidia in the presence of efficient additives such as molasses and formic acid or wilting prior to ensiling.
