Experiences with Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) Walp. in the Caribbean
The uses of Gliricidia sepium in the Caribbean are presented as documented in the literature and observed by the author. These include shade for crops, living fences and ornamental uses. The historical spread of the tree by residents of the region is discussed. The many local common names for the species indicate the multiplicity of its uses and the width of its distribution. Information on growth rates in Puerto Rico is presented. The establishment of high quality but diverse genotypes of multipurpose tree species can make a valuable contribution to rural development in the Caribbean.
