Experimentation in agricultural systems

The choise of methods of experimentation should flow from a sufficiently precise formulation of research objectives. It can only do so, however, if the formulation includes an adequate description of the system on which experiments are to be carried out. This can be done briefly and simply only for named and classified systems (including organisms) but for the statement of hypotheses relating to agricultural systems mathematical models are often required. The latter must reflect the purposes for which they are constructed and the main roles of experimentation are (a) to serve the construction of models (including establishing their validity) and (b) the testing of hypotheses generated from them
