Proceedings
This work was carried out in 274 goats between the first and fifth parturition and from 1.5 to 2.0 months before the drying off period. The goats were located in Celaya, Gto., Mexico. They were housed in earth corrals and the goats were milked by milking machine. From the 548 samples obtained, 37.0 percent were negative to CMT and 10.0 percent of these were positive to microbiological examination which were mainly Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis and S. micrococcus. The number of somatic cells by groups with the CMT were wide, existing overlaping between groups. The ranges of consistency for CMT were: 25 000-600 000; 100 000-1 000 000; 200 000-1 300 000; 200 000-2 400 000 and from 900 000-3 000 000 negative trays, 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The differences between the averages for the groups for CMT were statistically significant (P less than 0.001) and also there were differences found between the numbers of somatic cells in herds (P less than 0.01). Ninety percent of the cases were negative to CMT and microbiological examination suggests that when the CMT was negative it was a good indicator of absence of infection in the mammary gland; however, when the CMT was positive this did not always indicate infection
